AVAILABILITY DASHBOARD is a dashboard that transforms Excel reports into an interactive experience to improve flexibility in tracking and managing project outages for internal teams.
SUMMER 2025
ALTUS POWER
UX/UI DESIGNER
CONTEXT

Altus Power is a clean energy company that provides scalar solar energy for houses, businesses, and communities.
I worked with the senior designer, product manager, and multiple stakeholders to build a dashboard that engaged with multiple layers of crucial portfolio information.
PROBLEM
Excel sheets can get pretty old and disorganized, pretty fast.
Internal teams felt managing reports was outdated and disorganized. The reports are created on a weekly basis and lived in scattered Box files instead of one trustworthy surface… how could we improve this experience?

RESEARCH
What were stakeholders looking to get out of these reports? Which information was most valuable?
I analyzed the weekly reports, consulted additional Power BIs, and interviewed stakeholders to understand and fill gaps in spaces that Excel couldn't. Here were my insights:::
👩💻
MULTIPLE USERS = MULTIPLE USE[S]
Multiple internal teams (engineering, C-suite, etc) use these reports to manage portfolio information, but those details differ team to team.
🔎
ONE SITE ≠ ONE ISSUE
Projects are location based, meaning that one site can have multiple projects, with multiple issues. How do we organize and present this information?
🖼️
BIG PICTURE? SMALLER DETAILS?
Stakeholders found it valuable to view both the details and the ways they reflected the overall performance (revenue and energy) of the portfolio.
DESIGN GOALS

SOLUTIONS
Comprehensive macro to micro experience
The dashboard displays an overview of the entire weekly report compared with the entire portfolio, showcasing crucial information that many teams need right off the bat.

See the bigger picture
Gain a comprehensive overview of the entire report at one glance and weekly trends.

See how each project performs
View weekly availability and lost revenue for each project and how it performs the week before.

Where?… and what?…
See projects in detailed view and exactly where those reflected projects are located on the map, as well as how large those issues are. The accordion table was also a new pattern introduced to the design system.

From big picture to the specific details
Responsive fly-outs allow power users and technical teams tap into site-specific and issue-specific details to track and manage sites and projects.

REFLECTIONS
What a learning curve!
This was my first time working with a data-heavy dashboard, so it was quite a learning process, but one that was very rewarding. Working with such a creative and talented design team was incredibly valuable and taught me what type of designer I am & the types of products I like to build.
Here are my takeaways:::
🛠️
FORM///FUNCTION
Learning to balance form and function, specifically when to sacrifice one or the other.
💪
TECHNICAL CONSTRAINTS ARE PLEASANT CHALLENGES
Constraints are a breeding ground of ideas. It allowed me to introduce new patterns to the design system.

PIXEL PERFECTION IS YOUR ENEMY
Achieving perfection is impossible and unproductive. There're many times you'll need to compromise, and that's okay.
